Being able to style hair quickly is a superpower.
You’re able to get your incredible desired look in lightning speed, which allows you to spend more time kicking ass.
But not everyone has this ability.
For those of us who have unruly hair, getting it to look perfect unfortunately takes time.
The good news is that you can learn to style your hair quickly, even if it looks like a bird’s nest when you wake up.
In this guide, I will outline the top 5 things that could allow you to half (or even eliminate completely – see tip 1) the time it takes for you to get your hair ready in the morning.
1. Get a haircut that requires less maintenance.
You could go bald – that would fix your problem; but I assume you still want some hair.
In this case, a buzz cut as pictured above gives you the best of both worlds.
It requires no styling, makes you look like a tough nut, and isn’t quite as bold as bald.
The only downside is that it may not look good on you (I know it doesn’t on me) – it is very dependent on your face shape.
If this is the case, even a number 2 on the sides and a longer, non-buzzed top means that you don’t have to worry about the sides and back.
This has the added benefit of looking more modern, and is currently what I sport.
Now, moving onto how you can style your current hair quickly.
2. Try to figure out how to do the hair style without water.
Fact: When your hair is wet, it has to dry.
Fact: Your hair takes time to dry.
If you style your hair without using water, I envy you – you already have the super power.
When your styling involves water, the amount of time it will take for you to get ready drastically increases.
Therefore, it is logical that finding a way around this stage, while still getting the desired result, is the first step to styling hair quickly.
If you’re anything like me, you need water to un-tangle and ‘straighten’ out your hair; in other words, I have to prepare it for styling.
But I urge you to try applying your product directly into un-styled hair and try to work it into your normal style.
Here, you will see if it is possible for your hair to look good, even with no preparation.
You may be needlessly adding more work to your routine than you actually need.
3. If you have to wet your hair…
If you need to wet your hair like I do, then I would strongly suggest doing one of two things depending on your situation:
- When your style requires a part, or the use of a comb, wet the comb only and then style your hair as you usually do.
- In any other case, wet your hands and run them through your hair until it is wet enough to style.
By applying only small, concentrated amounts of water, you reduce the amount of water in your hair, and thus the amount of time it will take to dry.
This is all while still allowing you to control the all manner of crazy that are going on up there.
An even more effective solution is by using a spray bottle to apply water gradually.
There is a reason why your barber uses it.
Furthermore, a further advantage of this is that, if your hair isn’t damp enough, you can easily add more to the specific area that requires it.
4. Pat dry
Again, another tip concerning water management.
If you use water, after you have your desired shape, gently pat dry your hair as much as possible with a towel.
The water will be absorbed by the towel, and if you are careful, the style you have started to create will be preserved.
But your hair will not be completely dry – this is good if your style requires more volume, as you can subsequently work it through with a hair dryer.
This will take less time to complete that usual because of lower water levels.
In other cases where your style does not require volume, you are free to continue on with your routine until your hair fully dries, and then style it.
5. Wash your hair the night before.
If you have super greasy hair, then you may be inclined to wash it before styling.
This takes time.
If you do this the night before, you will wake up and be immediately ready to get on with your routine, thus cutting out this step completely – in the morning, that is.
But make sure that you have clean pillows, as grease from previous nights could transfer right back into your hair.
Not only will doing this allow you to style your hair quickly, but the healthy oils secreted during the night will mean that your hair will have a better structure and a healthy, natural shine.
Additionally, you could even apply a hair treatment to nourish and repair your hair, something that would be less effective during the day.
This is because these treatments work better on clean hair.
